The ancient city of Satala

An ancient city found  in the  Sadak village which is 17 km away to  southern east of Kelkit district. It is  assured that the area is the ancient city of Satala with the discovery of brick pieces marked with XV.  Legio Apollinaris.

Satala city  founded around the Roman Legion Camp, developed and became the center of culture during the Latin empire.

Today the Satala castle and ruins from Aquaducts , Theater , agora and other buildings can be seen in and around the city. It is known that the Satala castle was restored by Byzantine Emperor Justinian.
