Turkish Bath ( Hammam )

 

 Hammam is the name given in general  for a  sanitary place where people can go , get washed and cleaned . Traditional Turkish Hammams are the brick structures covered with a dome and having a special heating system together with hot and cold water supply.

 

The history of Turkish bath goes back very late in the history. Hammams were known and built in the early Roman empire period. The excavations made beneath the ashes which formed after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii revealed  the ruins of Baths proving that the Romans used the  First Hammams.

 

It is understood that the Roman Baths were mostly used for pleasure and entertainment than cleaning.

 

Due to the class distinction in the Roman empire the entrance gate of The slaves and nobles where separated. Roman baths differently  has also steam baths, hot and cold water pools.

 

Hammams were used untill the Medieval age  in the western world and Hammam tradition were deserted as a spoiled belief which make people think is the water used on the body after the baptism is sin and malicious.

 

According to  orders of Islam  about being clean and neat . Turks have extensively used the Hammams after they accept the Islam religion. Turkish bath was a necessity in every home. There were in Istanbul alone 168 Big public Turkish bath in time.

 

Turkish baths are divided into three main sections:

 

1) Dress changing  rooms, 2) Bathing areas: a. Cold area, b. Hammam, 3) Heating Location: Furnace ( boiler ).

 

 

Public baths are opened in certain days only for  women and other days are open to men. "Double bath" which  are composed of  two adjacent  baths to each other . One of these is opened for women  and the other is reserved for men. These baths are opened everyday.

 

 

Turkish Baths(Hammams )  are the best places for cleaning and clearing  of body with hot water and soaps in condition of not staying for long times.

 

Scrubbing the The perspirated body with a soft clothe or sponge relieves the blood circulation and give comfort to people.

 

Body perspires in the bath, rubbing a soft cloth or sponge to wash the body, blood circulation, making it easier to give people comfort.

 

Using hard clothes to rub can cause scars on the body.
