Kaymakli Underground City

Kaymakli underground city is located ,on the way to Ihlara valley, 20 km from Nevsehir city centre.

Kaymakli underground city is formed of 8 floors and it is so large as where 5000 people can live at once yet today only 4 floors of the city is opened for visitors. The deepest point opened for visit is under 20 mt of the ground. The road leading to kaymakli is surrounded with tens of souvenir sellers. The entrance fee of kaymakli is 15 tl per person.  The walking routes in the city is marked with arrows to prevent visitors lost in there. Red arrows have to be followed to go down and blue arrows need to be followed on the way out.

The first floor of the Kaymakli city is used as a kind of barn where the animals were sheltered and fed. Animals have great importance, to be able to provide fresh foods in case of any long stays in the undergrounds. As taking animals to the lower floors is difficult,  they mostly sheltered in the first floors of the underground Cities.

In the second  floor;  there is one church, a cemetery and one slider-stone that used to close the transitions can be seen.

The third floor compared the others is more spacious and comfortable. It is in general used as a food storage, in addition there is also a wine producing section and kitchen available to make foods.

There is a narrow and low passageway to pass the 4th floor, where only one person can go in with bending his back. The 4th floor is also composed of storages and kitchens.

You will also pay an attention to the holes in the walls that used to put oil candles to enlighten the inside.

The ventilation shaft can also be seen from the 4th floor. It is a vertical well and passes all floors down like on the elevator in an apartment. The depth of the ventilation shaft is about 80 meters in total.
