 Pamukkale Hierapolis Archaeology Museum


The  Roman Bath which is one of the largest buildings of the Hierapolis city is converted and used as Archeology museum. As well as the artifacts found  from the excavations of Hierapolis  many old remnants and artifacts belonging  to  cities such as  Laodicea, Colossae, Tripolis from Lycos valley  are also found in the museum. Also the  most beautiful examples of  Bronze age archaeological finds which were obtained from the  Beycesultan Tumulus cover an important part of the museum.


In addition, Caria, Pisidia and Lydia region’s  finds, artifacts and remnats are exhibited in the Hierapolis museum. 

Sculptures and Tombs Hall:

     This hall composed of  the sarcophagi, statues, gravestones , architectural columns, pillars and inscriptions found from the excavations at Laodicea and Hierapolis.You can see the statues of  Tyche, Dionysus, Pan, Asklepios, Demeter and  priestess of Isis.

  There are also good  examples(unique terracotta sarcophagus)   reflecting the art of the region in time  represents a good example of the period. Sarcophagus of Maximillan with an inscription on it and Sidemara type sarcophagus belonging a city council member ( arhon ) are  one of the most notable artifacts in the Pamukkale museum.

Small finds Hall

In this hall; many small antiques from various  civilizations since 6th century B.C are exhibited.  Idols, baked soil jug , ceremony (libation) pots and stone artifacts. Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine period , terracotta candles, votive cups, glass cups, necklaces, metal jewelry (rings, earrings, bracelets, etc.) are some of these small finds can be seen in this hall. The coins from Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine , Seljuk and Ottoman empire periods are also worth artifacts to see.


Hall of Theater finds

     Many pieces which was decorating the facade  of Hierapolis   theater  are exhibited in this hall. Some of the reliefs from the stage which are exhibited in the museum replaced with the copies put on the original place.

 The mythological reliefs of Apollon and Artemis  , Dionysus ceremonies,  the coronation ceremony of the Roman Emperor Septimus Severus.  Friezes;  depicting  the abduction of Persephone by Hades to the underworld . Statues of Apollo, Leto, Artemis, Hades.    

*The museum located between the Pamukkale travertines and Hierapolis pool and entrance fee is  5Tl (2 euros) .
