Alahan Monastery
Located 50 km away on the road of Karaman
to Mersin direction . It is withinth
boundaries of Mersin city and Mut district.
Monastery was built in 5th
century A.D by a monk ( Tarasis ) whose grave is also situated in the area . It
was built over a steep slope which facing to Goksu valley on a terrace in the
direction of east to west .
Alahan monastery is
composed of a Monastery and an annexed church together with its materials . In
point of decorations, designs of the structure;
monastery is one of the rarest
examples of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture
therefore it is among the candidates to be proposed UNESCO world heritage list.
