 Perge (perga)

Perge (perga) is the antique city today located in the aksu district of Antalya.

A massive greek move from northern anatolia to southern costs was occured in 12th century B.C . people from the immigration move , settled to east part of Antalya today and named the new settlement  as pamphlyia which means the country of races in greek language.

Perge was an important pamphylia site because of the location on the trading road of cilicia and psidia. Perge was founded inner parts of the antalya aiming the protection of city  by pirate attacks.

City was founded at the same time as the other pamphylian cities founded. Perge was an important religious site with goddess artemis for christians. Saint paulos and barnabas had been in perge and rich people of the city like magna plancia contributed many important monuments to perge.

Remains can be seen and visited today in perge antique city are ;

Monumental fountain (nympheum)

Theater:  separated 3  parts ; cavea , orchestra and scene. Capacity of the theater is 12,000 people.

Stadium :  covers an area of 34 x 234 m and 27 000  people can be placed in the stadium.  Thirteen seating row are built  over vaults.  One of third vault available in the stadium used as an entrace and shops.

Agora: is  the centre of politics and trading in the city. Shops are surrounding the court in the middle.  Some shops floors are covered by mosaics. Dimensions of agora is 76 x 76 m.

Columned street: lies between nympheum and aropol mountaio. A canal with 2 mt width in the middle divides the street.

Necropol , bastions , gymnasium , hamam , baths ,monumental gates and fountain are the other pieces  to see in perge ancient site.

How to get  perge ?

You can get a minibus from Antalya city center going to Aksu.  After  getting of in aksu district ; follow the way in direction of aksu high school. You will reach the perge ancient site by  400 mt. Walk.
