Letoon
Letoon being a sacred and political
site was like an altar of the Lycian
union. Letoon or temple of leto was discovered by an English naval
officer in 1841.
3 temples belonging artemis , Apollo and leto was revealed after excavations done in the
area. Besides these temples remnants from 6th century and a Hellenistic
porch from 1st century was found.T he scripts written in 3 different
languages over temple of leto give us clues about the life in letoon. Aramaic , greek and lycian scripts say that
the pixoderes had started to reign the caria and lycia satrapies in 358 a.d and
set a good relationships between the lycians and hekotomnid dynasty. Another
script gives information about the visit of Alexander the great to site.
Diffuculty of excavations due to the high natural underground waters in
the area obstructs to find more remnants in the area. Greek planned theater ,
temples , agora and nympheiums are the attractions to be seen in letoo.
According to a legen
said by latin poet Ovidius ; Leto after giving birth to her twins Apollo and
artemis in Delos island goes to the edge point of xantos river where the water mixes with sea
water. Leto wants to reach to source of
water from this point and starts walking through river and on the way to source
Leto wants to wash her twins in xantos however she is stopped by locals . She
turns all the locals to frog upon their rude behaivour to her. The other locals built a temple dedicated to
her exactly where she turns the people to frogs.
After visiting the
antique letoon you can go through the sea and beach . Letoon beach is a part of
18 km long patara beach but with a longer width around 2 km.
Not even one
restaurant or a place to accommodate in and around letoo so if you want to spend
time in beach get your picnic pack ready before you go.
