Museum first opened in 1934 at Zinciriye medrese and moved to new building ın elazig street in 1985. In the Diyarbakir archeology museum goods and pieces , monuments found  from neolithic era, Asurian, urartians, romans, byzantiums and ottoman periods exhibited.

Ziya gokalp turkish philosoph and Cahit sitki taranci famous turkish poets houses were converted to museums and their books and pictures are exhibited in this houses.

Ataturk museum situated in interior castle  of Diyarbakir exhibits the picture of ataturk and war of independance.
